The Wedding Cake Tradition
The wedding cake first started with Ancient Egyptians
as a cake of wheat or barley and was broken over the bride's head to signify
fertility. But early
Roman bakers, whose art was held in highest regard, grew offended at the waste
of wheat. They began
to bake small, hand-sized cakes — to be eaten, not thrown.
Festive guests, fond of the tradition of pelting the bride, tossed the cakes
anyway.
The Roman philosopher
Lucretius offered this compromise: crumble the cakes over the bride's
head, and to further symbolize fertility, the bride and groom would save a
bit of the cake to
feed each other.
In the Middle Ages, when times were hard in England,
people were less willing to throw food. The sweet cakes evolved to simple biscuits,
and guests
were encouraged to bring their own. After the eating — and
yes,
still some throwing — the leftovers were collected into a pile, to be distributed
amongst the poor. The size of the pile quickly became symbolic of the prosperity
of
the couple, who exchanged
kisses atop the mound. Ironically, it was this frugal practice that
gave rise to the multi-tiered wedding cake concoction we are familiar with
today.
The
French
chef of King Charles II
witnessed the cake-piling ceremony and was appalled at the haphazard
stack. Inspired to build an organized, tiered work of iced art, it became the
rage of all France. During the reign of King Edward II the cake was first (and
since) iced white. [From ... "FactMaster" ]
Cutting The Wedding Cake
The cutting of the cake is a lovely tradition that
occurs at the reception. Guests expect to see the married couple cut
their wedding cake together! It's nice to have a ribbon-tied silver knife,
sharp and serrated, for the ceremony. The bride and groom cut the wedding
cake together, and the groom feeds a piece to
the bride. The bride then feeds the groom. After
the wedding cake cutting ceremony, the guests are served. The bride customarily
serves her new in-laws the next piece(s), followed by the groom serving
his new in-laws.
When Do We Cut The Wedding Cake?
At your dinner or luncheon reception, cut the cake
just before dessert. For an evening cocktail reception or an afternoon
tea reception, cut the wedding cake after the guests have arrived.
How Do We Cut The Wedding Cake?
For a picture-perfect cake cutting, the groom
places his right hand over the bride's right hand, and together the couple
cuts into the bottom layer. Since cutting a wedding cake can
be a complex affair because of its size and multiple tiers, we will give
you detailed instructions as to how to cut the first piece. After the first
cut, have a pre-designated person finish cutting the cake (for a larger
cake, we recommend having the caterer take care of this duty. The wedding
cake is usually removed out of view while the cutting is done, so as to
not take the focus off the wedding party.)
How Do We Feed Each Other?
For your elegant wedding, smashing of the cake
into each other's faces is...well, wrong. Instead, the groom should feed
the bride her first bite, and then the
bride should feed
him. This taste of the first slice serves as a symbol of the bride and
groom's willingness to share a household.
