Q&A with Marianne and Lauren

How long have you two been friends?
16 years!!!! We met in 7th grade at Shore Jr High in Mentor, Ohio, and have been best friends since.

How long have you been decorating cakes?
Our first job was at a Dairy Queen where we learned to decorate cakes. Once we graduated from art school, we could not find jobs! So we decided to start a cake business, and it's been going strong since we opened our doors in 2007!

Where did you go to college, and what were your majors?
Marianne: Columbus College of Art and Design — I majored in Oil painting/Fine art.
Lauren:The Art Institute of Pittsburgh — I majored in Special effect/Movie Make-up/Sculpture.

What made you decide to start a cake business?
We love art and we love designing cakes, so it made sense to us. We knew that we had to involve creativity in our lives everyday, and with this business, every cake we create is different, so it never gets boring.

What is your proudest moment/accomplishment?
When we opened our doors in March 2007 to a crowd of people waiting to enter our cake shop for our grand opening! It was a rush of emotions, and felt really amazing that we were living out our dream of owning a business.

What inspires your cake designs?
Art, colors, patterns, texture — we get inspired from anything from nature to fashion. Creativity has always been our strongpoint, so inspiration is always there.

What is your favorite cake that you have ever made?
Marianne: An Art Nouveau inspired cake with sugar poppies and cast bronze spiders on the top that the bride made for her wedding cake.
Lauren: Any Food cake — Steak and potatoes, Thanksgiving dinner, waffles for LeBron James...It's really fun to make cake look like food!

What is your favorite dessert?
Marianne: Anything involving Rice Krispie Treats — And marshmallow fluff!
Lauren: Chocolate cheesecake peanut butter brownie.

If you were not a cake designer, what would you be?
Marianne: I would probably be involved in marketing or sales for any company in a much warmer climate, preferably California or Hawaii. Or a Yoga Instructor.
Lauren: Tattoo artist, surgeon or a pilot.

What is your favorite music to listen to while decorating cakes?
Marianne: N.E.R.D, Bob Marley, Radiohead, Bjork, Jay-Z
Lauren: Todd Rundgren, Counting Crows, OutKast, Tool

What is your favorite food?
Marianne: Sushi, Chocolate Peanut butter Cliff Bars, Blue Cheese, Dark Chocolate.
Lauren: Anything from Alladin's, anything made with fresh Cilantro.

What is the most difficult thing about owning a cake shoppe?
Living up to our own expectations, which are sometimes unrealistic. Time management is our biggest struggle, and deadlines are something that we are constantly dealing with. You either thrive under pressure, or crumble like a cookie! (No pun intended.)

What are your plans for the future?
We are planning on building a second location on the east side that is a large production kitchen and classroom for our cake decorating classes. We are also hoping to continue going back to the Food Network challenges. Other than that, hopefully getting some sleep!

We would like to thank our friends, family and amazing team of employees that make this business a success! Thank you Cleveland for supporting us and giving us the opportunity to do what we love to do every day. We are forever grateful!
Marianne would like to personally thank:
My husband Matthew — Thank you for loving me. I could not have done this without you.
My Brother Joe — Thank you for believing in us and our dream.
My Mom — Thank you for raising me to be strong and always supporting my goals.
Lauren — Thank you for being the ying to my yang!!!!

With love,
Marianne and Lauren
